Cody won All-State honors as a linebacker during his junior season in football. He dropped out of wrestling and took up boxing. Cody competed at the national tournament in wrestling despite him not competing for two years. He claimed the All-American honors and received interest from several NCAA Division I schools such as Penn State and Rutgers. Cody was recruited by the Michigan State Spartans but he ended up going to Newberry College a Division II school before dropping out due to personal reasons. He sold weed and worked as a bouncer after dropping out. Cody eventually completed coal miner training to work in the field familiar to his own family.
