Tagovailoa isn't the only person affiliated with sports in his family. His father's power lifted and taught him how to coach football. The only left-handed person in his family, Galu also taught Tua to use his left hand, even though he is naturally right hand-dominant.

Tua is also named after his fathers brother, who shares his name Tuanigamanuolepola. He was named after a sports-fanatic uncle who once reportedly tipped the scales at 500 pounds.
