The American former professional stock car racing driver Carl Michael Edwards was born on August 15, 1979, in Columbia, Missouri. The 41-year-old American is 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) tall and weighs 185 lb (84 kg). His birth sign is Leo, and he was raised Christian even though he refuses to talk about his religion in public.

Carl Edwards' parents are Carl Edwards Sr and Nancy Sterling. His father was a high school teacher and semi-professional racer, and his mother was a housewife. His mother later remarried, and his step-father was the Dean of the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He has a younger brother, Kenny Edwards, and a younger sister, Skye Edwards. Carl was influenced by his father, a prolific racer himself, to go into racing. He had his first Go-Kart at the age of 4 and started racing at the age of 15.

Carl Edwards attended Rock Bridge High School and graduated in 1997. He initially did not plan on attending college, but after receiving some financial assistance from his home state, decided to attend the University of Missouri, where he studied engineering. However, after three semesters he decided to quit and decided to pursue racing. Before becoming a full-time driver, he also worked as a substitute teacher.

Carl Edwards' wife is Katherine Downey. Carl had one serious relationship before her though, with Amanda Beard. Amanda Ray Beard, the 39-year-old Olympic gold medal-winning champion swimmer, dated Carl Edwards for a year, from 2005 to 2006. However, their breakup was not amicable, and their relationship was extremely toxic, according to Amanda's memoir which was published in 2012. In her book, Amanda has described Carl as controlling, manipulative, self-centered, uncommunicative, and jealous. From her description of Carl, it seems he had an of toxic male ego in him as well. Carl has responded to her accusations in an extremely passive manner though. He did not lash back at her and has welcomed her to ask his help if she ever requires it. He has also refuted and claimed ignorance about some of the character accusations made against him by Amanda. Amanda has moved on since then. She has married photographer Sacha Brown on May 1, 2009. They have one boy, Blaise Ray Brown (born September 15, 2009), and one daughter, Doone Isla Brown (born June 19, 2013) together.

Katherine "Kate" Downey, Carl Edwards' wife, or shall we say, Dr. Downey was born on March 15, 1979, in Columbia, Missouri (the same hometown as her husband). Her parents are Barbara, a University of Missouri graduate, and Edward Downey, a lawyer. She has one younger brother, Edward Downey Jr. Kate and Carl met in Columbia, their hometown, in 2006 (shortly after Carl's breakup with Amanda Beard). They started dating, and after three years got married on January 3, 2009. They have two children together. Their family life seems to be a happy one, with Kate balancing her career and also showing up for her husband's races.

Katherine Downey earned her degree in medicine from the Missouri, Kansas City School of Medicine in 2004. She entered residency at the University of Missouri-Columbia and completed the program in 2007 as Chief Resident in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She currently works to rehab patients with severe and traumatic brain injuries. Like her husband, Kate is extremely serious about her career, but spends adequate time with her family.

Carl Edwards and Katherine Downey have two children together; Annie, born in 2010, and Michael, born in 2011.

Carl Edwards was accused by ex-girlfriend Amanda Beard (an Olympic swimmer) to be controlling, self-centered and jealous. Carl has since then refuted these claims or claimed ignorance. He was rumored to be considering a run against Claire McCaskill for her U.S. Senate seat in 2018, however, decided not to run. Carl and his wife purchased the stationery for their wedding invitations from Office Depot, one of Carl's race sponsors.
