Daly was born in Carmichael, California on April 28, 1966. His father, Jim was an engineer who built and repaired nuclear power plants. His mother is Lou Daly who used to work as a homemaker. John has a sister named Leslie and a brother named Jamie. John was their third and final kid of his parents.

He also admitted that he had been battling the illness for a significant period of time in the past, although he had surgery to remove cancer. In order to limit the chance of this happening, Daly announced that he planned to stop smoking and quit drinking Diet Coke. In an interview, he said that he is 'NOT SCARED TO DIE'.   • In an ESPN documentary “Hit It Hard”, Daly told that he lost about $98 million and won about $45 million by just playing gambling. In his autobiography that he had struggled with a gambling addiction in the past. He specifically mentioned one particular incident when he lost $1.5 million in October of 2005 at a slot machine in Las Vegas. In the interview, Daly relayed a tale of how he let loose a bunch of cash in order to teach his then-wife (and now ex-wife) Sherrie a lesson. --- “I won like $55,000 in the casino and I said (to Sherrie) if you’re going to yell and scream at me about this, I threw it over the bridge going over to Memphis from Arkansas. I threw all the money out the (car) window and said, ‘You know what, if you want that money, you can go find it. But let me tell you something, you don’t have a job. You’re not working. I’m supporting you, I’m paying all the bills.’
