Big Cass or William Morrissey in real life was born on August 16, 1986, in the Glendale, Queens neighborhood of New York City. An Italian and Irish descent, he attended Archbishop Molloy High School and was a volunteer for the homeless shelter as a peer tutor. During his senior year, he played basketball and was featured in the Catholic High School Athletic Association Senior Classic All-Star game. After graduating high school, he received a scholarship and attended New York University initially as a pre-medical but later shift in studying Economics. He was Center for NYU Violets from 2005-2009 and co-captained the team in his last season. After graduation, he started a ticket brokerage company for Yankee Stadium and Madison Square Garden. Morrissey trained as a professional wrestler at Johnny Rodz's professional wrestling school in Brooklyn, New York City and debuted in 2010. Now he is currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the Raw brand.
Big Cass's girlfriend Carmella or Leah Van Dale in real life, was born on October 23, 1987, and also a professional wrestler in WWE. She grew up in Spencer, Massachusetts, a small town outside of Worcester and attended the University of Rhode Island and later transferred to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in marketing. After graduating, she became a cheerleader for the New England Patriots for three seasons, ending in 2010, and successfully auditioned for the Los Angeles Lakers dance team appearing from 2010 - 2011. Van Dale is a certified fitness instructor and a personal trainer.
Leah Van Dale signed with WWE in 2013 and was assigned to WWE NXT late September of the same year and in December announced that her ring name would be Carmella. She made her debut on the September 4, 2014, episode of NXT, portraying a hairdresser in a segment with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady and debuted her first in-ring stunt on October 16 episode of NXT. In the beginning of January 2016, Carmella received her first push, winning a battle royal to become the number one contender to Bayley's NXT Women's Championship. On the August 17 episode of NXT, she competed in a six-woman tag team match alongside Liv Morgan and Nikki Glencross, in which they defeated Daria Berenato, Mandy Rose, and Bliss, which served as Carmella's last match in NXT. On July 19, Carmella was drafted to SmackDown as part of the 2016 WWE draft and made her debut on July 26 for the brand. On June 18, Carmella was declared the winner of the first-ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match. On July 24, 2017, it was announced that Carmella would be joining Total Divas as a main cast member for the show's seventh season.
Big Cass and Carmella have been an item since their days in NXT. When Carmella become Big Cass and his partner Enzo's manager in NXT, Cass and Carmella began dating at some point while working and traveling together, developing chemistry on and off screen.
On September 13, 2017, Big Cass was interviewed and asked about Carmella and said "Oh yeah, we never see [each other]. We see each other one-and-a-half days a week! I think we're the only couple on [WWE] TV that isn't on the same brand if I'm correct. I'm almost 100% sure that that's the case. Yeah, so we're the only ones. It's tough. We see each other one-and-a-half days a week." Cass reflected, "we talk about everything but wrestling. We try not to talk about wrestling. It's just too much. Yeah, we try to stay as far away from it as possible."
Leah Van Dale is the daughter of Paul Van Dale, a former professional wrestler who worked as a jobber for WWE in the 90's and also wrestled independently.
