Warushavithana Upul Tharanga, commonly known as Upul Tharanga, is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer, and the current captain for Sri Lanka for ODI and T20Is, who plays for all formats of the game. He is now 32 years old (born on February 2, 1985). -- Upul is the youngest child of his parents. His father was a fish market dealer and his mother is a housewife and he has one elder brother and one elder sister. Despite the fact that his elder brother used to enjoy swimming, Tharanga selected cricket when he was a kid. He passed with a grade 5 scholarship from Devananda College, Ambalangoda in 1995. Tharanga had his secondary education at Dharmasoka College. Since he had to participate in many cricket tours, he could not complete his education towards the advanced level. He started his cricket career as a teenager at his school.

Upul Tharanga is currently married to Nilanka Vithanage. Before marrying Tharanga, Nilanka was married to Sri Lankan cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan. She even has a child named Resadu Tilakaratne with Dilshan. Currently, Nilanka is the owner of an online store called loshi_drapesbynilanka.
It is rumored that the closeness between Upul Tharanga and his wife Nilanka Tharanga created a rift between her and Dilshan which later led to their divorce. They took divorced on May 9, 2008. Dilshan paid Rs. 8 million as divorce compensation and only Rs. 20,000 per month for the child.
